A motorized and virtualized raft project will optimize mussel farming

Nov 28, 2024

The MAR SPAN project, led by SOERMAR and developed by Mar Technologies 5.0, seeks to revolutionise mussel farming through the implementation of smart rafts. These rafts will have automation, sensorization and virtualization systems, powered by renewable energies and an interactive virtual twin.

Key points of the project:

  • Crop optimization: It is expected to increase production by 35% to 65% and reduce the mussel reproduction cycle by 15% to 25%.
  • Sustainability: Follow-up trips to the rafts will be reduced by 70%, thus reducing emissions and production costs.
  • Advanced technology: Artificial intelligence will be used to manage the mussel strings, ensuring homogeneous growth and optimal feeding. In addition, the weight of each rope will be monitored to determine the ideal time for harvesting.
  • Security: Real-time monitoring will allow you to act quickly in the event of incidents such as theft, falls or boat impacts.

MAR SPAN is part of the TECNAVAL 2025 project and represents a significant step towards more efficient, sustainable and safer mussel farming.

SOERMAR:

  • It is a society that is dedicated to the study of Maritime Resources.
  • Among its objectives is the improvement of the competitiveness of shipyards through research projects and technological support.
  • It encourages cooperation between shipyards and companies in the maritime sector.
