“Mar Span” Project: Innovation in Mussel Farming
- The Society for the Study of Maritime Resources (SOERMAR) leads “Mar Span”, a revolutionary project designed by Mar Technologies 5.0.
- This project focuses on the development of motorized, sensorized and virtualized rafts, with the aim of optimizing and making mussel farming more sustainable.
- “Mar Span” is a key part of the Tecnaval 2025 project, supported by the Naval PERTE, and SOERMAR is responsible for its execution.
Advanced Technology Features:
- The pilot raft incorporates an interactive system that monitors marine conditions in real time thanks to a network of sensors.
- The system has:
- State-of-the-art automation, sensorization and virtualization.
- Renewable energies (wind and solar) complemented by a bioethanol backup generator.
- An interactive virtual twin for complete tracking of the mussel’s reproductive cycle.
- Intelligent management of 500 ropes using artificial intelligence algorithms, ensuring an equitable distribution of phytoplankton and homogeneous growth.
- Sensorization of the weight of each rope, for the correct management of collection and growth.
- An automatic system for sinking the raft according to sea conditions.
- Virtualizacion del proceso de crecimiento del mejillón con Algoritmo IA para toma de decisiones en exposición, movimientos y, así, monitorizar tendencias y optimizar el proceso.
Expected Benefits:
- “Mar Span” will optimize the mussel growth monitoring process, significantly reducing trips to the rafts.
- This entails:
- Reduction of emissions and production costs, with a positive impact on the environment and the economy.
- Decrease in the reproductive cycle of the mussel between 15% and 25%.
- Increase in production between 35% and 65%.
- 70% reduction in trips to the rafts to control their growth cycle.
- Immediate response capacity to incidents such as theft, falls or boat impacts, thanks to real-time monitoring.
